Friction is the most damaging force that opposes your vehicle’s motion. Since the invention of the internal combustion engine, engine friction has been a major concern on performance, drivability and fuel consumption of a vehicle.
Did you know that more than 60% of a vehicle’s fuel energy is wasted just to overcome engine friction alone? While only less than 15% of the fuel’s energy is used to move the vehicle; with the rest of the energy being lost to other inefficiencies such as driveline and idling. The interaction between the piston, liner and piston rings alone creates the most engine friction and accounts for a massive 30% to 50% of total engine friction (Source-US Department of Energy on Internal Combustion). Such inherent inefficiency caused by friction in engine designs provides much opportunity for performance improvement.
